If you say the word “coffee”, you imagine a nice mug full of some dark and sweet or spicy beverage. It is impossible to resist the temptation to drink at least a cup of coffee per day. As all the great things that have been part of human development, coffee has its own history and it is worth being told.

The development of the facts that form coffee history includes wars, religions, political and mysteries. How coffee spread around the world is an interesting and sometimes incredible history that deserves to be described. It is said that in the 9th century a Persian physician defined coffee as bunchun. Despite that, real information about a beverage made of some red toasted berries was recorded many years later.

There was an Arabian writer who collected information about coffee and prepared a story on it. He included some information about a Sheikh that was the first person to use coffee as a social beverage. Traders and pilgrims to Mecca contributed to spread coffee in that area. At first, coffee was not considered a good preparation for religious aims, so it was forbidden. In spite of that, it became so popular that the prohibition was overturned in the 16th century. On the other hand, Ethiopian Orthodox Church considered drinking coffee a pagan practice and coffee was also banned in Ethiopia.

It was up to the 19th century that coffee was accepted as a “normal” beverage. Europe could not escape from coffee invasion. According to different stories and legends, the first European country where coffee was accepted was Italy, through Venetian merchants. Pope Clement VIII allowed its use and it made coffee houses to be built in the most important cities of Italy.

It is said that a French man brought coffee to America. The Martinique and all the colonies of the West Indies were the origin of the most important coffee plantations at that time. Then, in the 18th century, Brazil got the first place as American coffee producer and coffee became a real commercial commodity. Although Ethiopia is said to be the place where coffee originated, it was not up to the 20th century that this country began to export big amounts of coffee to other countries.

John Smith, Virginia and Jamestown founder, introduced coffee in North America, at the beginning of 17th century. It gained great popularity because people wanted to get rid of tea that represented Great Britain power. In 1808, in Boston, the biggest Coffee Stock Exchange was built.

Bans, prohibitions and bad reputation could not stop coffee invasion. Nobody knows if coffee will lose its special place in the beverage world but we all know that we are not able to refuse a cup of coffee when somebody else offers us one. This marvelous, fragrant and sometimes spicy beverage is a real temptation that seems to have come from heaven.

Nowadays coffee is a very important industry for many countries in the world and like all great facts in human lives, coffee has its own legend and it is necessary to tell it.

It is believed that the first coffee trees came from Ethiopia. The most famous legend about the origin of coffee says that one day an Ethiopian goatherd called Kaldi realized that his goats seemed to be very excited after eating some red berries from a tree. Thus, Kaldi, who felt very tired, tried some of the berries himself. He felt energetic and inspired to dance at once. Some monks, who saw what had been happening, prepared a beverage with the red berries in order to pray all night long. That method was effective and the story about the magic berries was known by many people.

This is not the only one legend or story about the origin of coffee. For this reason, there is some confusion in following coffee usages and beginnings. On the other hand, the first possible mention to coffee was by using the words bunn and bunchum, two Arabian terms. Coffee trees grew wild in Ethiopia, so it is thought that the Ethiopians might have carried some seeds to Yemen in the 6th century. But the Dutch were the ones who spread coffee in Europe. They prepared the tree to survive in Paris and London. The coffee tree went on traveling with them to the Dutch, Guayana and Brazil. The Dutch thought that coffee could be a great business and offered a tree to Louis XIV who built a Green House for the valuable plant.

There is another version on how coffee came to the New World. Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu thought that coffee trees could grow quickly in Latin America because of its climate. Thus, he stole some seeds from the King's coffee tree. He shared his water with the only plant that survived the trip. That coffee tree reached the Caribbean islands and its seeds spread easily along the coasts.

In Europe, coffee became the most popular beverage in the 17th century when Pietro Della Valle, a Venetian trader, brought coffee beans to Italy. In addition, the first coffee shop in Paris was open in 1672 in Saint German Avenue. In Great Britain where tea was the king, coffee was love at first sight and coffee houses were established.

Coffee reached North America coast under the influence of British taste. In the 18th century, taverns sold tea and coffee that became more and more popular. After the famous “Boston Tea Party”, colonists considered unpatriotic drinking tea, so coffee was imported from Central and South America.

Legends and stories help us to understand why coffee has become so popular. Drinking coffee offers us advantages and disadvantages but nobody can say that coffee is an insipid or unpopular drink. Coffee story helps us to know how this tree has traveled around the world and how people from different cultures surrendered to its properties and flavor.

What is coffee? It is not only some black or brown beans which are sometimes crushed to prepare a hot beverage. Coffee represents several things such as: culture, comfort, relief, pleasure or consolation, among other feelings and facts. There are some different kinds of coffee but all come from a tree.

The best coffee is always produced in places with warm climate and with rich soil. So, there are many countries around the world that have all the conditions to be good coffee producers.

The most well-known varieties are Robusta and Arabica. Robusta type is sold cheaper because it can be harvested up to 5 times a year. On the other hand, Arabica can be harvested only once a year, so its production is kept and then sold as a precious gift that is expensive and rare.

Nowadays, there are about 50 countries that produce coffee. All of them have the climate and soil characteristics to offer good coffee to the world, but their productions are different. Some of them run along marvelous coast and their soils are the consequence of many volcanoes' eruptions. These countries are privileged places because they have the opportunity of harvesting the best coffee of the world.

The most important coffee producers are Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Mexico, India, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras and Uganda. Thus, coffee can be found in America, Asia and Africa.

How does this delicious cup of coffee reach your table? It is a long process that begins when coffee berries are picked and the beans are removed from them to be dried (caramelization). During this process, the beans change color and they get the fantastic flavor that everybody knows.

At present, we enjoy a cup of coffee without thinking of its huge background. It was first used for religious ceremonies by different people in Asia and Africa because it replaced wine where alcoholic beverages were forbidden. On the contrary, other religions have forbidden coffee in order to avoid its unhealthy use.

Coffee can be consumed in different ways and to make the perfect cup of coffee is not difficult. In addition, instant coffee is also available for people who do not have enough time to grind their own coffee beans or to use the electric coffee machines.

Remember that it is not only the coffee machine the one that prepares your coffee. You need to use the perfect proportion of water and coffee. Water should be heated to just off boil. Of course, the most important thing before starting the whole process is to get the best variety or coffee blend.

It is said that coffee contains some compounds that may alter human body chemistry. These compounds may be toxic only if consumed in large quantities. It can be also stimulating, so it is recommended not to take it in the evening in order to have a good rest. Despite that, coffee has had a romance with all sorts of people for more than one thousand years. This energetic beverage has its fans and its detractors but everyone knows that it has been involved in human history and it has accompanied people in wars, festivals, private parties etc. It is impossible not to try it at least once!

The most famous black beverage all around the world is not black beer, it is coffee. Coffee tree is one of the botanical species Coffea that has 500 genera. Perhaps, you imagine coffee trees full of small dark beans but in fact, they have red cherries that after being dried produce the renowned brown or black beans. After 5 years, coffee trees get their maturity and the history of most pleasant drink starts.

From the immense popularity of coffees, this coffee fact should not be too surprising- coffee sales are amazing; about 7 million metric tons are annually produced. This means that coffee may be a very important source of income for any country. Brazil has been the largest coffee producer but Vietnam is the second in the list. This country has reached the first place as exporting nation of Robusta coffee variety that is specially meant for instant coffee manufacturers or bigger industrial customer for its cheaper price.

Each coffee producer tries to remark the benefits and qualities of the coffee they produce. They will use different processes and techniques to get the best coffee and these methods will depend on the variety. Some of the most famous ways of drinking coffee are: espresso, instant coffee and decaffeinated coffee.

Espresso or caffe espresso facts

It is a “modern” way of enjoying a cup of coffee. This nice beverage was created in Milan, Italy at the beginning of 20th century. It consists of some coffee brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through the ground beans (it must be a fine powder). It was in 1940 that the spring piston lever machine was invented and the espresso became the coffee we enjoy at present. Espresso machines take beans and transform them into the most delicious cup of coffee. The most well-known espresso machines are Saeco (Italy) and Jura (Switzerland).

Instant Coffee Facts

This coffee variety is prepared using brewed coffee beans. They have passed through different process to be dehydrated in order to get powder or granules from them. After that, when somebody wants to use it for preparing a cup of coffee, it is necessary only some hot water to rehydrate it. It can be ready in a few minutes. The advantage to use instant coffee is that it is easy and fast to prepare. The disadvantage is that the amount of caffeine is smaller and it makes instant coffee not to have as good flavor as other coffees. In spite of that, it is very popular for its price and availability.

Decaffeinated Coffee Facts

This sort of coffee is less harmful for health but it does not provide the consumers with the same fantastic flavor that traditional coffee does. It is obtained after soaking the coffee beans in water in order to remove the caffeine with a solvent. Then, the beans are submitted to a process to get their characteristic flavor again. Therefore, after all these procedures, decaf coffee may not have the same aroma than the espresso or instant coffee but it will be useful for those who want to avoid caffeine.

The most important thing is that everybody may be offered the possibility of enjoying some hot coffee in the right moment. Thus, the different ways of selling coffee helps people to find the proper coffee for them
